Some Ruff Competition Flyball Team

Emily Venator

Emily began playing flyball with a borrowed border collie in the late '80's.   In 1989 she emerged on the scene with a whirlwind of a Bearded Collie named "Denia".  It took a "working" trip to Bermuda and some coaching from her team-mates to best channel some of Denia's enthusiasm for the game.  In 1991, Some Ruff Competition was founded with just four dogs and lots of Beardie enthusiasm.

Denia was followed by her daughter "Hope", and her surrogate kids, Airedale Terrier "Lileigh" and Border Collie "Henna".  In addition to flyball, they had successful careers in other dog sports including conformation, herding and agility.  In 1994, Emily and Glenn donated the "Denia" Award to the Bearded Collie Club of America to promote excellence in standard agility in the AKC.  The intent was promote interest in Beardie owners in the then emerging sport of agility.  The people responded and 10 years later, there are hundreds of Beardies competing successfully in agility.

As Flyball Co-coordinator and chief scorer for the 2000 and 2001 ESPN Great Outdoor Games, Emily was the first witness of the sub 16 second time recorded by the EJS in the sport of Flyball when Rocket Relay clocked a 15.9.   It was an exciting moment for all and the first of many incredible times to come in the sport!

Emily has been known to "take a fall" for the team when she manages to get between an oncoming dog and its ball.  She's started to pack an assortment of braces along with all the other paraphernalia required to compete in Flyball.

Emily is SRC's handler for the Jack Russell Terriers "Whinny" and "Rodeo", until she can turn the spotted one over to daughter Emma Kate.  She and Glenn share "Salsa" between the two of them, with Emily doing the training in Herding.  Depending on who wins the 'coin toss', either Glenn, Emily or maybe even Johnny will be the one on the mats with newcomer "Mabel" in the 2007 season!   Ah, they all forgot about the dark horse . . . 'auntie Barb' handled Mabel in her '08 season debut and the two of the ROCKed the lanes!
